strawberry fair

Strawberry Fair is the stage name of swedish soul/pop musician Jenny Franzén (born in the the Municipality of Ekerö in August, 1983). Inspired by bands such as The Aislers Set, Shop Assistants and Television Personalities she began writing her own material in the early part of the 21st century. 2003 saw the release of her first two self financed CD-R singles: "Empty Wallets and Greedy Companies" and "Strawberry Fair". That same year her song "Don't Take Everything So Seriously" was featured on "Picknick Picks!", a cassette compilation put together by the swedish fanzine Picknick and the California based record company Popgun.

The next track Jenny committed to disc was "Attack!" and the album was "This Is My Secret Garden", a compilation released 2005 by the My Secret Garden label. "Attack!" was originally penned in 1965 by Sandy Linzer and Denny Randell for the New York girl group The Toys. The fact that Jenny chose to cover it is a clear indication of her shift in musical direction - the lo-fi mannerisms of those introductory CD-Rs replaced by girl group, Motown and Brill Building influences.

"Strawberry Fair sings 'I Can't Do Anything'" is Jenny's latest CD EP, it saw the light on the 28th of February, 2008. And what a fantastic disc it is! Four songs, four instant crushes. If you love melodies and proper pop - and who doesn't? - you'll love "Strawberry Fair sings 'I Can't Do Anything'". Simple as that.

Tracklisting:
1. I Can't Do Anything (2:26)
2. Why Won't He Answer (2:52)
3. Kristoffer (1:09)
4. Give Up (3:11)

Here you can download Strawberry Fair's version of the The Elgins/The Supremes/Chris Clark/The Isley Brothers song "Put Yourself In My Place"! It was originally featured on the 3" CD that came with (the now sold out) fanzine Cloudberry 404.

"Ah, äntligen finns Strawberry Fairs uppdaterade girl group-pop på skiva." - Lars Jämtelid, Digfi [original]

"Every song, except for maybe 'Kristoffer', is an instant hit combining lyrics that aim straight for the heart and vocals that could have made Phil Spector shed a tear with a clean and modern indiepop sound." - The Boy and the Cloud, Heaven Is Above Your Head [original]

"It's very 1960's girl group inspired and even sounds like Steptoe and Son for the first few bars. You can imagine her singing this in black and white live on Ready Steady Go! Another one for the indie pop dancefloor." - Tom, Indie MP3 [original]

"All these songs have a very 60s girl-pop feel to them, especially 'Why Won't He Answer' and 'Give Up'. Like the 60s girl pop bands, they all seem to involve falling in love - but in Franzén's case, it sounds like she's failing in love and you get the impression that she's painfully shy too. I just love it! " - Vu, WM [original]

"When I arrived at the Myspace page in question to find a picture of an adorable Swedish girl in pigtails staring at me, and the classic Phil Spector-esque sounds that accompanied it, I breathed a huge sigh of relief. It didn't take long for the initial feeling of relief to transition into giddiness over the fact that I had a brand new pop group to fall in love with." - squaregirls, squaregirls [original]

"Each of these four songs is as delightful as the last, making for a very pleasant ten minute EP! MTQ=4/4" - Chris, IndiePages [original]

"All four songs are high quality indiepop, with a bit of motown-beats, 60s girl-group harmonies, oooh-aaah's, handclaps and glockenspiel." - Knut, Eardrums [original]

"But the main charm-contributing factor is definitely the songs themselves, which are perfectly-constructed Motown and girl-group influenced indiepop." - Dan-onymous, Painfully Suburban [original]

"If you like a bit of soul music mixed in with your indiepop, then you need look no further than Strawberry Fair. Jenny Franzen from Sweden is the very talented singer / songwriter behind the group. With a single due to be released on Cloudberry Records in 2009 I thought I would catch up with Jenny to quiz her about the origins of Strawberry Fair, and her musical inspirations and influences." - Stevie, please rain fall [original]
